Every Day is Your GODDAMN Birthday!!
So we just passed into a new year a month ago (according to the Gregorian calendar), then I noticed that the Chinese/Lunar New Year just passed, and I think the Tibetan calendar celebrates a different new year a few weeks from now.
And of course, there’s the Mayan calendar, the Hindu calendar, the Julian calendar—the list goes on and on. They ALL have different New Year's celebrations, different dates, different cultures, different traditions … I can’t keep up.
What’s your fucking point, Megan?
The point is: these are all reminders from cultures around the world that we always have an opportunity for a fresh start, no matter what time of year, no matter what the circumstances are "out there.".
The point is: EVERY DAMN DAY is a chance to begin again.
Actually, EVERY DAY is like your goddamn birthday!
We’ve all heard the sages say: “Live every day as if it’s your last.”
And yet, most people are slogging through their days, grinding themselves into exhaustion, waiting for some future moment when they’re finally “allowed” to enjoy life. The vacation. The weekend. The special occasion. The retirement plan that may or may not even arrive.
Newsflash: Life on Earth Is a Crazy Fucking Shit Show.
If you’re not doing at least ONE thing every day that lights you up, it’s time to reevaluate.
If you’re not finding something to be grateful for, something that makes you laugh, something that turns you on (mentally, emotionally, creatively, physically), then I hate to say it, but you’re kinda doing it wrong.
Because here’s the deal: the world isn’t gonna hand you joy on a silver platter. If you’re waiting for life to slow down, for circumstances to be perfect, for permission to finally enjoy yourself… you’ll be waiting forever.
Instead of letting yourself be stunned into silence, shocked into submission, or numbed out by endless scrolling and to-do lists, seize the opportunity to actually live.
The Science of Pleasure: Your Brain Is Wired for It
Pleasure isn’t a luxury. It’s a biological necessity.
Your brain and nervous system are literally designed to seek it out because pleasure regulates stress, balances hormones, and keeps you emotionally resilient. Here’s how it works:
Dopamine & Anticipation – The brain’s reward chemical. You don’t even have to get the thing—just looking forward to it (your morning coffee, a massage, your favorite show) already lights up your brain’s pleasure centers.
Oxytocin & Connection – Hugging someone, making eye contact, sharing a laugh—all these simple things flood your system with oxytocin, the “love hormone,” which lowers cortisol (stress) and increases a sense of safety.
Serotonin & Gratitude – That feeling of deep contentment? That’s serotonin. And one of the easiest ways to boost it is through gratitude. Not in the toxic positivity “good vibes only” way, but in the actually noticing the little joys way—sun on your skin, a deep breath, your favorite song coming on at the perfect moment.
Endorphins & Playfulness – Ever laughed so hard you forgot what you were stressed about? That’s endorphins at work. Moving your body, playing like a kid, or even just smiling can trigger this natural high.
How Hustle Culture Kills Your Joy
Modern hustle culture has taught us that pleasure is a reward, not a requirement. That rest and enjoyment have to be earned. That productivity is the only thing that makes us valuable.
And that’s a fucking lie.
Chronic stress floods your system with cortisol, which blocks pleasure, disrupts sleep, wrecks digestion, and keeps you in a constant state of “not enough.” If you’re always grinding, always pushing, always waiting until later to enjoy your life—you’re training your brain to expect stress instead of joy.
Here's a song for you that expresses exactly what I'm trying to get at with some deep wisdom from the late, great Alan Watts:
How to Fuck the Hustle & Actually Enjoy Your Life
Wanna live every day like it’s your birthday? Try this:
🔥 Find Micro-Pleasures – Savor your first sip of coffee, wear your softest sweater, stretch like a cat when you wake up. Small joys count.
🔥 Make Time for Play – Seriously. Dance in your kitchen, make dumb jokes, do something just for the hell of it. Play shifts your nervous system out of stress mode.
🔥 Turn Mundane Tasks into Rituals – Light a candle while you work. Drink from a fancy glass just because. Put on music while you cook. Ordinary moments can be elevated.
🔥 Move & Breathe Like You Mean It – Shake out stress. Take deep, satisfying breaths. Your body is begging you to live in it, not just use it as a vehicle for productivity.
🔥 Practice Gratitude, But Make It Real – Instead of forcing gratitude, notice what already feels good. The warmth of your bed. The sound of rain. The moment when you exhale and remember you’re still here.
🔥 Act Like You Have Nothing to Lose – Because honestly? You don’t. This moment is fleeting. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. The only thing you can control is how fully you show up for today.
Stop Waiting for Permission to Enjoy Your Life
You don’t have to hustle to earn pleasure. You don’t have to wait for some “perfect” future to feel good. You don’t need a special occasion to celebrate being alive.
Every day you wake up is a fresh start.
Me? I’m living every single day like it’s my birthday.
Like I get to do what I want.
Like I get to have as much fun as I want.
Like I get to make as much impact as I want.
‘Cause it could very well end tomorrow.
So I’m livin’ it up while I can.
And when I go, I’ll go with NO regrets!
And if you like the idea of this, but you can’t possibly muster the energy right now because you’re burned out and exhausted, I got you!
Next week, we’ll talk about energy and what you can do to get yours back!
Make LOVE ❤️ not HUSTLE.
